FROZEN FOLLICLES – Using the best wax in the winter.

Cold temperature often means low humidity which dries out skin. During the winter month’s people find their skin is rough, tightened, cracked or peeling due to dryness.

Most clients like to push their waxing appointments for as long as they can in the winter months, believing it’s a waste of time when we are covering up wearing long pants, leggings or tights.
In fact, waxing in winter can be more important than waxing in summer, as in the colder months wearing clothes such as tights and leggings, which rub against and break our hair, can lead to uneven hair growth.
Maintaining your waxing in winter, will keep hair growth even, your skin silky smooth, and you’ll always be prepared for any unexpected events.

Tips for waxing in cold weather

Try and keep the salon comfortable and warm.

When waxing larger areas with strip wax, Adam & Eve Coconut and Lime Oil can be used after lavender pre wax to prepare and soften the skin prior to treatment. Spray the oil onto your gloved hands and apply using friction massage movements to warm the surface of the skin.

We recommend hot wax for all intimate waxing and in the winter months it is even more important. Hot wax also known as hard wax has more workability for intimate waxing; when the weather is cold you have less time to work with strip wax in intimate areas before it starts to set, so there is more chance of breaking the hair at the surface.

Adam & Eve Coconut and Lime Oil is perfect for intimate waxing, used as a pre wax and setting oil for hot/hard wax. A fine mist of spray it is applied to the area about to be waxed to soften and protect the skin making for easier hair removal. Once the wax is applied, immediately apply a light amount of Adam & Eve Coconut and Lime Oil on top of the hot wax and smooth over the surface whilst pressing down with your gloved hand before removing.

Some people find facial waxing very painful in the winter. There is less moisture in the air and what natural oil you do have in your skin can be blown away by the wind. Once inside, central heating is also very drying, our skin feels much tighter in cold weather and if you have sensitive skin, the dryness will lead to flaking and itching, damage to the barrier can cause inflammation and more sensitivity.

To cleanse skin for facial waxing, on a cotton pad mix 50/50 Adam & Eve Lavender Pre Wax Cleanser and Adam & Eve Coconut and Lime Oil together and wipe over area to be waxed, remove using a warm towel or facial wipe,

Apply a small amount of Adam & Eve Coconut and Lime Oil onto the fingertips of your gloved hands, gently pat a fine film on the surface of the skin, tissue off any excess oil and apply hot wax in the direction of the hair growth, use the oil as previously explained to set the surface of the hot wax and remove against the hair growth. For facial waxing to effectively remove peach fuzz we recommend the reverse method of waxing.
Use our After Wax Lotion for best results in winter on facial areas.

Are Vegan synthetic waxes with the latest formulations worth the extra cost  vs  cheaper generic waxes?

As the UK distributor of Adam & Eve Wax we are often asked if we supply “natural” waxes. Although there is a trend for more natural products, this is not always the best option for your waxing clients.

We did previously offer waxes based on pine resins, beeswax etc – these are as close to natural as possible. We have now moved on and have class leading vegan friendly, paraben free waxes using synthetic resins.

Some people tend to suffer from allergic reactions – sometime this is a lifelong allergy. However we need to be aware of allergic reactions due to repeated exposure to products, latex is one example of this. Generally there are less chance of reactions, such as redness or bumps on the skin when using synthetic waxes rather than formulas using plant based materials.

Natural pine resin can suffer from variable batch quality. The colour can also vary from a pale yellow to a darker brown and there is a resinous odour. Having said this, Glycerol esters which are the better standard of pine resin are used by the better quality manufacturers of wax.

Synthetic resins known as hydrocarbon resin are generally of a very high grade, they are much cleaner in colour, have very low odours and are consistent from batch to batch. Adam and Eve Wax are at the forefront of using synthetic resins in their depilatory wax formulas.

Tina from Adam and Eve wax says “We use mainly synthetic ingredients from reputable manufacturers and we can trace all  the synthetic products used in our waxes.  A cheaper wax will use pine rosin – this not only does not perform as well it is more likely to cause allergic reactions for your clients”.

So while “natural” may sound better it may not always live up to the claim.

Karen Colborne who heads up our Beauty Training Barn adds:

Along with questions such as the use of natural ingredients, we do get asked about the pricing of our products versus various cheaper waxes available.

How can your business benefit from using a top quality hot wax and strip wax? – Here are just a few:

  • Better quality synthetic waxes are easier to use, saving you treatment time, they will also spreads thinner giving you more wax treatments per pot!
  • A less painful experience, can only result in clients recommending your treatments to their friends, bringing in more business for your beauty salon.
  • A client who has a less painful bikini wax, is more open to you suggesting an underarm wax , so increasing your number of treatments in a given time slot.
  • Beautiful subtle fragrances enhance your clients salon experience when they visit you for their waxing treatments.

If you invest in the best beauty training, why not keep up the theme of good quality and use a better standard of product for your waxing. BE THE PLACE TO GO IN TOWN FOR THE BEST WAXING TREATMENTS

The quotation below is one of our favourites:

“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten”

Many salons and technicians we chat with, use and retail top quality products. What surprises us is how many have not considered the advantages of offering a high quality vegan wax for their salon. This feedback from a salon who has moved to us from a generic wholesale brand sums it up very nicely.

“Absolutely loving your wax, so easy to work with and it smells divine. Amazing feedback from my clients. Pain free waxing!! Even had my female clients booking their hubby’s in for a bit of de-fuzzing!!”

During the summer months the requirements of our skin are very different than during the cold UK  winter. From our Adam & Eve wax international trainer here are some summertime waxing tips.

When offering waxing treatments to your clients in the summer it pays to be aware of the contraindications that are more relevant on a Summers day in the salon.

  • Medical conditions such as MS cause heat intolerance.
  • Sensitivity to heat.
  • Medications that interfere with the regulation of body temperature.
  • Moisture being trapped under the skin due to high humidity.
  • Skin conditions that are affected by heat.
  • Common allergies associated with warmer weather cause the skin to be more sensitive.
  • Sun exposure, especially sunburn.

When your client comes in for their waxing treatment in summer they will be hot and possibly perspiring. Ask them to arrive 10 minutes before their appoiontment to allow them to have a cold drink of water and give them to time to cool down. Our waxes help as they operate at a lower temperature which helps with sensitivity to heat.
When waxing your client it is important that cooling fans or air conditioners are pointed away from the area you are waxing and not near or on the wax heaters as this will interfere with your wax application and temperature regulation.

Client consultation as we always stress is of utmost importance, conditions such as hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, fluid retention, and more can cause heat intolerance. Nasal decongestants and more common allergy medications can  inhibit the regulation of body temperature.

When wax is applied to skin that is overheated the chances of grazing and possible skin reaction are increased .
Apply our paraben free Lavender Blue Pre Wax to the area to cleanse, this will cool and calm the skin and perfectly prepare the area to be waxed.

When you are using hot wax on sensitive or intimate areas apply a light film of our pre wax oil, prior to application to create a protective barrier on the skin.
On very hot days it is best to choose one of our faster setting hot waxes made with synthetic resin. Angelic hot wax as an example sets up quickly, remains ultra pliable and the synthetic resin is less likely to cause sensitivity.

Our Coconut and Lime Oil is designed to set our synthetic hot waxes faster. As an example, when waxing with our Coconut and Lime or Lavender hot wax, apply a fine mist of the oil (using a spray top) over the surface of the wax and immediately press down.

Another way to set the wax faster is to apply a small amount of Coconut & Lime Pre and After Wax Oil to your gloved hand (opposite hand you apply the wax with) Apply your chosenhot wax to the area and immediately run your gloved hand with the oil on, over the surface of the wax and press down.

When you are using Strip wax in hot weather it is important you do not apply the wax to skin that is perspiring, this can cause the wax to stick on the skin or graze the client when removed.

Always ensure a thin application of wax onto the area to be waxed and when removing strip wax do not allow too much wax build up. If you allow this build up on a waxing strip there is a chance of grazing or the clients skin lifting.

At the end of the waxing treatment use effleurage movements to apply one of our after wax lotions. This will help calm and protect the skin.
When waxing larger areas advise your client in summer it is better to wear cotton garments after waxing..

It is very important to stress that your clients should avoid exposure to the sun for at least 24 hours.
